Environment and biodiversity

Protecting the environment and managing natural resources is a key responsibility of regional councils. Regional councils are often also involved in pest control and resource management.

  • Ensure council supports the community groups that manage our "grassroots" response to pests and weeds.

  • Create more natural and marine reserve spaces that protect our natural wildlife from pests, and allow fish populations to rejuvenate.

  • Establish a workforce to reduce pollution and waste in beaches parks and reserves, by increasing compliance and enforcement.

  • Reduce sediment run-off into Hauraki Gulf, Manukau and Kaipara Harbours, streams and natural waterways.
  • Implement controls on quantity of sediment leaving any given site in addition to existing process controls.
